Hi Gábor! Welcome to World Stop Stuttering Association. It’s great to have you here. I also used to grimmace and have those blocks you mentioned, some of them lasting for several seconds. The good news is thanks to Lee’s method, I stopped stuttering, in all situations. You can also do it!
Have you taken the online course? It’s fantastic. It makes the book so much easier to understand. Of course, watching videos of the coaching sessions is also very helpful. I used to watch at least one per day. You can use a lot of filters and watch the most suitable videos for you (for example, if want to watch videos that explain, for example, Crutch 1, or that explain Self-hypnosis, or that focus on giving presentations, job interviews, etc).
There’s also a lot of very useful stuff on the Blog and this Forum. So feel free to ask us anything!!
Be sure of one thing. More than a hundred people have posted a Success Story (and therefore become PWSS). If they have done it, you can also do it!JavierModeratorHi Erica!! Welcome to World Stop Stuttering Association. You’ve come to the right place. If you’ve taken a look at the website, read Lee’s “Stuttering & Anxiety Self-cures” (and taken the online course) and seen the videos of the coaching sessions, the Success Stories and the videos of the Speech Club meetings we have every Saturday, you will surely have noticed that a lot of people have stopped stuttering, some of them being very severe cases. So there is no reason to think that you can’t do it. If +100 people have become People Who Stopped Stuttering (PWSS), so can you.
My name is Javier, I live in Madrid (Spain), I am a PWSS (used to be a severe stutterer) and one of the Certified Speech Coaches here. Here’s the link to my Success Story, in case you’re curious: https://speechanxietyanonymous.org/pwss/javier-madrid-spain/.
Feel free to ask us anything. Be sure of one thing, if you follow our method, your stuttering days are counted!!
JavierModeratorHi Adam!
The magic of the Crutches, and why they make our speech sound not only fluent, but NORMAL (and not robotic or unnatural, like some of the methods that other speech therapists and programs teach) is that fluent people use them too, without noticing in most cases.
In any event, the ones who’ve read your Success Story, we know that you’ve gone though a lot, and that your speech journey hasn’t been easy at all, and it is great to see you so happy and simling when you come to our SpeechAnxietyMasters Meetings on Saturdays.
Have a great day!!JavierModeratorHi Ali,
since you are a stutterer/PWS, you should definitely go for the “Stuttering” course. And it is also the most complete program, check here: https://worldstopstuttering.org/signup/The “Speech Anxiety” course is aimed at those who don’t stutter, but are terrified of speaking in certain situations (public speaking, groups of people, strangers…). This course should also be considered our next step as People Who Stopped Stuttering (PWSS). Becoming a PWSS means that we know how to avoid appearing stuttering, but that doesn’t mean that the fears have disappeared. You will conquer fears too, but it takes time, just like it takes time to stop stuttering.
If you have any other questions or comments, please do let us know 🙂
JavierModeratorHi Ali! Welcome to WSSA! If you want to stop stuttering and actually learn to enjoy speaking, no matter the situation, you’ve come to the right place. My name is Javier, I live in Madrid (Spain), I’m a PWSS and a Certified Speech Coach, just like Prathusha. I used to be a severe PWS, so if I’ve been able to do it, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t. It’s a matter of patience and determination.
I strongly recommend you to do the online course about Lee’s Stuttering book. Read the book and at the same time do the online course about the Section(s) you’ve just read. This will help you understand everything much better.
You can also take a look at the Blog (on the Community Section of this website). There’s plenty of useful information and advice, just like here.
And of course, watch the coaching videos (you can filter them, so if you want to watch one focused on a specific Crutch, or Autosuggestions, or other things, you can do so). This should help you a great deal.
And of course, we will be happy to coach you. This will make you stop stuttering much faster, if you follow our advice, of course. Coaches don’t cure anybody, you do. We just give you instructions, but you have to follow them.
Feel free to ask us anything! We’ll be glad to help you any way we can.September 10, 2020 at 11:10 am in reply to: How do you get used to speaking and sounding completely different? #27713JavierModeratorHi Taz! Great question!!
Well I used to stutter quite heavily, and I hated it. I watched videos of Lee coaching other people and explaining to him how to use the Crutches, and how they made that person speak fluently and immedaitely, so I wanted to do the same thing. I wanted to stop stuttering, and I didn’t care if if felt weird. I knew they mde me speak the way I wanted.
It’s the same as when we want to learn a new skill. It will always feel weird at the beginning, until we become good at it, and then it becomes second nature to us.If you’re beginning to use the Crutches, don’t feel discouraged for feeling this way. Continue practicing!! You just need to practice until you get better at it. Check that when you use them, you feel better, more relaxed, less anxious. That’s the strange feeling we’re talking about. You’ll get to love it, and to love using the Crutches. I use them even when I don’t need them, they make me feel more relaxed, in control, more confident.
September 7, 2020 at 8:22 am in reply to: What is the hugest compliment you have received after self-curing? #27687JavierModeratorHi Adam,
I think that when we’re so passionate that we end up stuttering is because we began to get too anxious, to speak too fast, not pausing… In other words, not using Crutches while accumulating anxiety, and that’s a problem, because, as you said, we might stutter.
We can be extremely passionate and speak slowly, insterting pauses every few words, modulating our voice, smiling. And when we do this, we don’t accumulate anxiety. At least that’s the way I see it.
And about the lat thing you said on your last comment… I have another way of seeing it. Of course we could relapse and stutter, but the difference between now and before we knew about this program is that now we know the tools to avoid stuttering. It is our choice to use those tools or not.JavierModeratorFantastic! Please do keep us posted with your progress!!
JavierModeratorHi John! My name is Javier and I’m a PWSS and one of the certified coaches here. Welcome to WSSA!! I’m glad to hear that the book is helping you. The videos (both the online course and the coaching sessions) are very helpful. I watched at least one per day when I was a PWS, and it really helped me understand things more clearly.
Keep on working on your speech! More than a hundred people (that we know of) have managed to stop stuttering, some of them being severe PWS (yours truly), so there is no reason to believe you can’t.I would also recommend you to take a look at the Blog section of this website, there’s a lot of useful stuff too. And of course, feel free to ask us any questions or post any comments here. There might be a lot of people who have the same questions that you do, so you’ll also be helping them.
This Saturday’s (5th of September) SpeechAnxietyMasters Meeting (go to the “Community” Section) the topic will be “Stump the Experts ; Question Those Who Beat It”. Feel free to join us and ask questions, make comments, meet new people… We will celebrate more of these “question the experts” meetings, like once a month. Normally on these meetings we have a speaker (could be a coach or anybody who volunteers), and they will give a speech about any subject they want (normally it’s related to speech) and then we can ask questions, comments… It’s also a great way of meeting new people and getting rid of the fears to speaking in public and to groups of people.
September 2, 2020 at 9:03 am in reply to: Hello everyone, I am Ruz along with a testimonial about Lee’s methods… #27667JavierModeratorHi Ruz,
I have also been a severe stutterer, although not a shut-down blocker. Thanks to Lee, I became a PWSS last year, and I am a much happier person, a completely different person. I only wish I had met Lee earlier. I will always be grateful to him (and to my friend who recommended me his book) and to WSSA for everything they’re doing for me and the rest of the stuttering community. It’s simply amazing.JavierModeratorHi Amit. Thanks for this message! This is the reason why we do what we do. As you said, now you know the tools to speak fluently, permanently. Your next battle is against fears. Fighting fears is easier than fighting stutters, but it takes longer to win the battle, but I’m 100% you’ll win it, and you’ll learn to love to speak in ALL venues. I strongly recommend you to attend to our weekly SpeechAnxietyMasters Club meetings (https://worldstopstuttering.org/speech-club/), because this is the perfect place to fight fears of speaking to groups of people, and learn to have fun when speaking infront of an audience. Of course, you can simply attend as a listener, no problem with that. And another great thing about this speech club is that you meet many other PWS and PWSS from all over the world.
August 31, 2020 at 8:45 am in reply to: Sounding “dramatic” while using “extreme pronunciation” #27655JavierModeratorhahahah, that’s awesome, Adam. I truly believe that this helps us to speak fluently. When we do it, we’re focusing on that precisely, and we’re not focusing on our stutter-fears.
JavierModeratorThe idea is to avoid stuttering, and this is a way of doing it. We shouldn’t feel bad for doing it. We avoided a bad incident, appearing speech disabled. that’s a success. Most likely, in the past we would have stuttered on that word, but not now.. Of course, the more we master the Crutches, the better we get at using them, the more direct we will become.
JavierModeratorHi Adam! Some people simply prefer to speak on the phone rather than texting (it can save a lot of time), and I’m sure that they weren’t thinking about what you said when they called you.
When I was really close to becoming a PWSS, a friend of mine that I hand’t seen in ages invited me to his house and have a beer. We talked for hours, and I didn’t sutter during that time. The last time we saw each other was months ago (when I stuttered severely). Do you think he praised my speech, or even commented on it? No. I’m sure he didn’t even realise it. He didn’t remember the way I spoke. People have more important things on their mind. That’s what I learnt that day.By the way, I sometimes prefer to make a phone call rather than texting for 2 reasons: it saves time, and I also enjoy hearing the voice of the other person.
JavierModeratorHi Adam,
from my experience, when I focus on my ideas (not words), on being passionate, on being more expressive, I never stutter. That’s the ultimate goal I think. To speak wthout planning our words. If we’re able to do it, and we make it a habit, we will be able to speak fluently without the need of Crutches, because they will have become second nature to us. -
