I personally still feel fear because even though I grab a crutch my anxiety does go down but in the back of my mind is always this feeling of “well I guess we’ll see if the crutch works” and it usually does. I still have a bit of uncertainty when I use a crutch. Also when I know I am going to say my name I use crutch 4 and I can say my name (so far) everytime by doing soft voice and crutch 4 but I still have that fear or panic when I do say my name. Hope this helps.

Mirko, Yes I totally agree. I am still fearful of saying my name so the anticipatory anxiety will set in until I finally say my name and then feel relieved for the day. But I agree that the mindset you go into a situation with will either increase or decrease your speech. As soon as I get anxious about knowing that I have to say something I immediately think of a crutch.

Oh sorry Leah I did not see this. It’s not that I HAVE to say my name, but it feels like I need to because it will help me with being more confident in saying my name and just KNOWING that I can really do it. So I’ve been forcing myself to say my name every time I go into school and I have used crutch 4 with soft voice every time and it has worked. I don’t appreciate it enough but this a HUGE milestone for me. I could show them my phone or tell them my last name, but for some reason when I tell them my last name I get a stutter urge when I expect them to ask for my name. I am not sure why.

I have the exact same issue Mirko. I smoothed over my biggest problems which is/are vowels by using word-linkage and crutch 4 mostly. But now I have problems with B, D, and St. I don’t know how it happened. So for B I drop the first letter, for St I drop the second letter, and D I assume I drop the first letter or just find a synonym. But I am also like you I use the crutches sometimes and not as often as I should be.

Thanks for the advice Javier. I am still shy in regards to public speaking and even just speaking in some social situations so at this time I won’t be challenging myself to do any presenting but the advice makes complete sense to me. After I am done school I will be focussing on my speech diligently again so I will definitely start reading the book and watching the videos. I am not too concerned with being the best speaker or being a good presenter or reducing fears of presenting I am more concerned with day to day conversations in regards to choppy speech so I think practicing crutches 7-12 should help with choppiness. But as soon as I am done school and graduated I will be working on my speech again as much as I did as a PWS to continuously improve but as of right now it isn’t a primary drive or motivation to be the best speaker. I always just wanted to be good enough at speaking which through the program I have achieved! But I don’t have that drive to be a perfect speaker just yet. Again thanks for the advice! I will definitely use it.

That was phenomenal advice Javier. I also had these problems in situations at school where I had to make small talk with strangers. Sometimes I would think a word so I would just avoid saying the sentence altogether.

And also the only reason I made this post was because someone in a SAM meeting once asked “how do you take the program if you have depression?” which was a great question. How do you get yourself to be motivated when you are depressed or down? It is extremely hard and is a great question. So I was just hoping I could help someone!

Very good Javier. It is a great read whether you have depression or not especially if you are a science based thinker. It goes over the brain regions and neurochemicals involved in lifting yourself out of depression, but you could also consider it a book to help with boredom or stagnant lifestyle because it gets you to want to activate these parts of your brain through activity such as learning or exercise.
