I want to activate my gym membership to workout again but there is a new rule I am fearful of. You have to say your name to get into the gym to show you have an appointment booked. Now my name is Adam so I usually use crutch 4 and say “UhI’mAdam” as one word or I say “it’sAdam” but I am still fearful of blocking on my name and the fear is preventing me from activating my gym membership because once I activate it it means I will have to say name EVERY time I book an appointment for the gym. The reason I am fearful is because even when I use a crutch such as 4 sometimes I feel like I will block or repeat in middle of using it. I think Lee would say I am hesitating and that is why the blocking fear appears in the middle of using a crutch and my name. I’ve also tried giving them my last name first because it is easier and they still ask for my first name. What should I do!?February 21, 2021 at 8:10 pm #28956JavierModerator
I agree with what you said about Crutch 4 and hesitations.
As you know, you have many other options (do it smiling and, if you want, handing your ID while you say it, or showing the appointment):
C-1: you have several options here: “am-Adam”, “footAdam Playfoot”, “ayfootAdam Playfoot”, and other combinations…
C-2: if you have a nickname, use it and then say your name.
C-3: “A-D-A-M-Adam”, “P-L-A-Y-F-O-O-T-Adam Playfoot”
C-4: WeeeellAdam, SooooAdam, MmmmAdam, AaaaandAdam, etc
Try a mixture of C-5 and C-6: try something like “hello, so I have an appointment at 6 o’ clock, I’m Adam by the way.
C-7 or soft voice, or a combination of both: you can always say that you have a sore throat.
C-8: how about modulating it? I’m sure you’ve heard Prathusha speak. She speaks almost like singing. And we all love it. Give it a try, be as passionate and excited as you can about going to the gym.
And of course, the last option is to simply show your ID…
I’ve always tried to be as friendly as I can with everybody. Now all the workers of my gym know me, they know my name, and I get along with them very well, which is great! The same thing happens with other places I go to, such as bars and restaurants I go quite frequently.
Hope you found this helpful.
One last thing, in case you don’t know it, the Crutch Mastery Series video course is available here in WSSA. Feel free to watch those video lessons. Even as PWSS, it is always good to refresh the Crutches, just in case. These videos are rather short (around 15-20 minutes), and there’s one video lesson dedicated to each Crutch.
I hope you find this helpful Adam. Have a great day!February 21, 2021 at 9:15 pm #28957
Thanks so much Javier! Tons of options! Stay safe!February 23, 2021 at 7:44 am #28979Leah AreffModerator
Adam, do you actually have to say your name? Or would you be able to write your first and last name on your phone and show them your phone?March 1, 2021 at 9:48 pm #29031
Oh sorry Leah I did not see this. It’s not that I HAVE to say my name, but it feels like I need to because it will help me with being more confident in saying my name and just KNOWING that I can really do it. So I’ve been forcing myself to say my name every time I go into school and I have used crutch 4 with soft voice every time and it has worked. I don’t appreciate it enough but this a HUGE milestone for me. I could show them my phone or tell them my last name, but for some reason when I tell them my last name I get a stutter urge when I expect them to ask for my name. I am not sure why.March 2, 2021 at 8:31 am #29033Leah AreffModerator
As long as you are not stuttering, then push through the fear. I would say that if you find yourself stuttering, then stop saying your name and write on your phone.
After a couple of times writing your name on your phone, show them your phone AND say your name at the same time. Then, after a couple of weeks, you will be able to say your name without your phone.
You will then insert sounds or words before your name and use word linkage while holding a tone.
